In this, an infected tooth or teeth are not extracted or removed but are salvaged. The outermost layer of the tooth is the enamel and then is the dentine. Beneath this is the pulp cavity which has a mass of cells, nerves and blood vessels. During root therapy treatment, the dentist reaches into the pulp cavity and clears out the mass there. This cavity is then cleaned up and disinfected thoroughly. A material like gutta-percha is filled up in the cavity which is then sealed off from the outside environ with cement. A dental cap or crown may be placed on top of the tooth if there is a crack or some discoloration there.

How is it different from dental implants?

Dental implants require the tooth or teeth of the person to be extracted out. A titanium screw is embedded into the jaw bone with a surgical operation. It takes about three to four months for the jaw bone to grow around the screw naturally. This will make the screw become firmly implanted in the jaw bone. A dental crown or cap is placed atop the screw, and this is how the world sees the dental implant. By this method, a person can come as close as is possible to have a smile and manner of eating and talking as close to natural. Dental implants can last the entire lifetime of a person if they are cared for well. Also with these, there is no danger of the tooth or teeth slipping out of the mouth if a person bites too hard or talks or laughs loudly.
However, good oral hygiene should be maintained after the implants are placed. They should be brushed twice each day, and even regular flossing should be done. Also, the patient should make it a point to visit the dentist every few months for making regular adjustments to the implants.

What are dentures?

Dentures are artificial teeth. For these two, the teeth need to be extracted. Before this, an impression of the teeth and gums is taken, and this is sent to the dental laboratory. The dentures are manufactured there. Dentures need to be replaced every five to seven years. They can become loose with time. A lot of are of the dentures needs to be taken. They should be removed at night and placed in a container with the cleaning solution into which a cleansing tablet is added. They should also be brushed with the solution. Care should be taken that there is no build up of plaque on the dentures. Dentures mean having to take a lot of care. If a person is wearing them, care has to be taken to not bite too hard into sticky foods or else the dentures may crack up. Also, a person cannot laugh too loudly as the dentures may slip out of the mouth of the person.

For details contact: (850) 477-5252.

Root canal therapy is also called endodontic treatment.
